Sustainability is the Focus and Promise of Island Slumber

If you love our Mother Earth, think sustainability in all of your choices. From food to healthcare; construction to safety; stewardship to activism -- think sustainability.

What is the definition of sustainability?

The quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance.

Sustainability is a much-discussed topic in many areas of life. While our business here at Island Slumber is focused on premium bamboo bedding, we recognize the importance of fully understanding and sharing what sustainability means across many industries globally.

So while our promise to you our valued customers is sustainability as it relates to the highest quality bamboo bedding on Earth, we wanted to expand what we’ve learned to appreciate about sustainability from different points of view.

Sustainability in Education

Sustainability is one the newest degree subjects that attempts to bridge social science with civic engineering and environmental science with the technology of the future. When we hear the word “sustainability” we tend to think of renewable fuel sources, reducing carbon emissions, protecting environments and a way of keeping the delicate ecosystems of our planet in balance by using renewable resources such as bamboo.

In short, sustainability looks to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health, while driving innovation and not compromising our way of life.

Sustainability in Construction

Bamboo as a building material has high compressive strength and low weight has been one of the most used building material as support for concrete, especially in those locations where it is found in abundance.

Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world and its growth is three times faster than most other species of plants. It is a renewable and extremely versatile resource with multi-purpose usage. Among many uses of bamboo, housing is one of the major areas applications especially in the wake of residential shortages around the globe.

Sustainability in Textiles

Bamboo textile is any cloth, yarn or clothing made from bamboo fibers. While historically used only for structural elements, such as bustles and the ribs of corsets, in recent years different technologies have been developed that allow bamboo fiber to be used for a wide range of textile and fashion applications.

Examples include clothing such as shirt tops, pants, sock for adults and children as well as bedding such as sheets and pillow covers. Bamboo is an alternative to plastic that is renewable and can be replenished at a fast rate. Be sure to read the label to ensure the product is 100% bamboo, not combined with rayon.

Sustainability in Bedding

Today it’s hard to escape the dire need for sustainability in almost every aspect of our lives. The extreme realities of climate change and global warming are a screaming wake-up call to the world. When we act on things such as restoring degraded land and reforesting it with bamboo (which replenishes itself in only three to five years), we can feel confident that we are moving in the right direction.

Bamboo has so many proven qualities it’s hard to count them all. Did you know that bamboo is 40 percent more absorbent than even the finest organic cotton? So, bedding made from bamboo wick moisture away from your skin much faster, keeping you dry and comfortable. When it comes to bedding, sheets, pillows, and comforters, this one attractive characteristic alone makes bamboo the preferred choice.

When you factor in bamboo’s naturally-occurring hypoallergenic and antimicrobial properties, it’s no wonder more and more people are choosing bamboo bedding over traditional cotton or expensive silk.

Among bamboo's many fine attributes are its biodegradable features. Bamboo can be easily composted and repurposed in earth-friendly ways, unlike other fibers which become landfill fodder. Biodegradable and sustainable all in one.
