How Often Should I Wash My Bed Sheets?

How Often Should I Wash My Bed Sheets?

That depends on a lot of factors, starting with how well you sleep, how much you sleep, and whether you’re well or sick.

The Good Housekeeping Institute suggests bed sheets and other bedding should be washed at least every two weeks. And if you suffer with night sweats they suggest once a week. But studies show that only about 44 percent out of 1,000 Americans wash their sheets more than once or twice a month.

Of course there are varying circumstances. If you’re allergic to dust mites, for instance, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends weekly washing, and in water that is at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit or 54.5 Celsius to kill dust mites.

Now, if you're sick with something contagious, that changes the scope. As soon as you’re up and out of bed, the bedding should be changed to get rid of all the germs. And make the water even hotter -- between 140 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit (60 to 65.5 Celsius). If you do not have a sanitize or heat setting on your washer, then put your dryer on the highest heat setting.

What About Pillows?

It’s shocking to know this, but many people don’t think it’s necessary to wash their pillows. They are under the delusion that the pillow cases protects the pillow completely. That is simply not true. Sweat, dust, and dead skin cells collect onto your pillow and then you have the same problem as you do with your sheets.

Besides, washing your pillows will fluff them up and also make them last longer. It’s a healthy and a practical reason to wash your pillows at least every six months or less.

Here at Island Slumber, we feel good about how well our bamboo sheets, pillows, pillow cases, and bedding wash. Some people think that bamboo fabrics need special attention, but the fact is your bamboo sheets and bedding actually get better with every wash.

When you add our New Zealand Organic Wool Dryer Balls to your dryer, you will have soft, wrinkle-free bamboo sheets ready for your sleeping comfort.

Clean, healthy bedding will always help you sleep better and when you add the benefits of sleeping on bamboo bedding, you’re getting extras. Bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic, so if you have asthma or allergies, you’ll love it. Bamboo also breathes better than cotton or silk, so you stay cooler and warmer no matter what the temperature is outside.
