Natural Wellness Tips for Women Over Age 50

Maintaining wellness and good health is a matter of making good choices for women of any age.

Enjoying good health doesn’t just happen. To enjoy an active life no matter what age you are, living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to ensure a positive outcome.

While it is easier said than done, a more holistic approach to health and wellness might be an easier and certainly more logical way to get there. Think of it simply.

Natural Wellness Comes with Making Good Choices

If you don’t like water, learn to. Water is your friend. Carry your water bottle with you at all times because staying hydrated is critical to wellness. After all, 60 percent of our bodies are made up of water, so keep it replenished!

During the dog days of summer, it’s easier to remember to drink water, but during the cooler months we tend to slack off. Drink water regularly. Your skin will look better and your body will function better. Also use filtered or bottled water, which is generally much cleaner than tap water depending on where you live.

Make time to reflect and feel calm by using breathing techniques and meditation. Yoga is a good technique to help you with this. Breathing techniques help you feel less anxious and relieve stress, so breathe deep and breathe often. Deep breathing will give you a more focused, balanced sense of being.

Get up and move! Yes, that means getting physical. It’s best if you can find some form of exercise you actually enjoy. If it’s fun (or at least enjoyable), you’re more likely to stick with it. You need at least 30 minutes of active exercise each day -- no skimping.

Wellness of Mind, Body, and Spirit

A wonderful way to relax and clear your head is through massage. It allows you to let go of your anxiety and immerse yourself in the moment. It’s also good for breathing and mental clarity.

Eat nutritious foods and feel better for it. While a cheeseburger may sound wonderful, think about how you will feel a few hours afterward. Your body needs wholesome fuel to run well, and even if you lapse 20 percent of the time, but you’re still doing well 80 percent of the time, give yourself credit. Leave sugar out of your diet, as much as possible. When you do weaken, reach for dark chocolate.

Sleeping the recommended 7 to 8 hours a night is one of the smartest things you can do to maintain wellness. We spend up to one-third of our lives sleeping, so when you do head for your bed, make it a Sleep Oasis® that’s cool, dark, and complete with Island Slumber’s bamboo sheets, memory foam pillows, pillowcases, and comforter. You can also use aromatic lavender oil to help lull you to sleep, along with your natural Himalayan salt lamp to purify the air. Oh my -- youwill look forward to going to sleep more than ever.

Do what brings you the greatest joy, whether playing with your pet or grandchild, hanging out with friends or relatives, or throwing yourself into a well-loved hobby. Do what you love! You’ll feel better for it.

Overall, live your life to the beat of your own drum and don’t be discouraged or led by what others do or say. Be your own best friend and find the right life balance for YOU – in mind, body and spirit.
