How to Live a Longer, Healthier Life

Just a few changes can increase your chances for a life of wellness, strength, and enjoyment.

 Life expectancy for Americans is surprisingly shorter compared with almost all other high-income nations. It’s an alarming trend according to health and nutrition experts.

In a 2018 study conducted by the American Heart Association’s journal calledCirculation, it was found that people who adopted habits of wellness at age 50 could live up to 14 years longer.

Average life expectancy in the United States is currently 78.6 years, based on the latest statistics.

Here are five healthy habits you can employ to improve your chances of living a longer, healthier life.

Engage in Physical Activity on a Regular Basis

At least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity is recommended for greater wellness. Or, you can do a combination of the two.

Add in muscle-strengthening activity and distribute your activity throughout the week.

You don’t have to be a long-distance runner or do intense gym workouts to be physically active. Consider brisk or power walking, tennis, bicycling, swimming, and dancing to add variety to your activities.

Maintain Suitable Body Weight

A body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9 is a suggested healthy range. Because obesity is a risk factor for heart disease, stroke and premature death, maintaining your weight is vital for optimum wellness.

Although it’s not much fun, it’s important to watch your calorie intake and keep an eye on your weight by stepping onto the bathroom scale more often. Many people can easily gain a pound here, a pound there and over time pack on 30 or 40 unwanted pounds.

Eat a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is not difficult to maintain wellness. It includes nutrient-rich foods that provide the protein, minerals and vitamins you need. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be a daily fare. Other foods should include whole grains, low-fat dairy products, skinless poultry and fish, nuts and legumes and non-tropical vegetable oils.

Avoid sodium, red meat, saturated fat and sugars, including sugary beverages. Water is important for hydration, so drink plenty of it.

DoNot Smoke

While the country has made strides in reducing smoking, there's still more work ahead of us. Cigarette smoking creates a higher risk of dying of coronary heart disease and other risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and physical inactivity.

Never smoking is your best choice and can readily improve your life expectancy.

If you do smoke -- QUIT. There’s simply no in-between if you want to live a longer, healthier life.

Keep Alcohol Consumption Moderate

Consuming alcohol can increase the level of some fats in the blood, known as triglycerides, and can lead to high blood pressure, heart failure and even certain cancers. It will also increase your calorie intake, which in turn increases the chances of obesity and diabetes risk.
